Three South Korean owners win race for LNG newbuildings at DSME and SHI.
SK Shipping, Korea Line and Hyundai LNG will each order two ships domestically after winning a hotly contested tender.
DSME will also be smiling having secured contracts from Hyundai and Korea Line to build four of the six vessels. The two SK Shipping vessels will be constructed at Samsung Heavy Industries, Kogas says.
Kogas floated the tender in July with TradeWinds later reporting that up to 10 shipowners had shown an interest in the business.
Earlier this month we revealed the owners and shipyard pairings on the project after Kogas has nominated its preferred bidders.
Among those missing out after today's announcement are owners Pan Ocean and H-Line and shipbuilders Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hanjin.
Kogas needs the LNG carrier newbuildings to lift the 3.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG it is buying from Cheniere Energy’s Sabine Pass LNG in the US Gulf. Imports are scheduled to start from May 2017.
